In the previous topic I mentioned the difficulties that children with high capacities have for, in many cases, adapting to the school system. Although it is an issue that affects a minority of students, it is one of the worrying issues of The school that awaits our children.
Children considered gifted are 2 or 3% of the total population and those of High capacities They are 10%. As the mother of one of those children I am very aware of this particular problem.
In addition, 25% of total students fail to acquire normal reading comprehension, which is why they are considered "functional illiterates." That is, they can read, but they are unable to understand what they read, do not understand it, do not analyze it or remember it.
The amazing thing about this is that we are talking about boys who finish high school or who, at least, complete schooling until they are 16 years old. But these kids have passed through Primary without acting effectively to help them achieve something as basic as reading comprehension.
So many textbooks, so many compulsory readings, so many exercises and memorial exams, they have been letting them pass year after year without doing what is necessary to acquire that basic competence. How is it possible?
These problems of the school that awaits our children they can and should improve with the collaboration and involvement of families, but also with appropriate policies.
