They use amniotic bag tissue to heal eye injuries

If you thought that the bag that protects the baby inside the womb ended its function once the baby was born, you are wrong.

There is a technique, which although it is not new is not well known, by which patches are made from amniotic tissue that facilitate healing in eye injuries like erosions or ulcers.

Of course, I was surprised by this medical use hidden behind something as valuable during pregnancy as is the bag containing the amniotic fluid and the baby.

It is made from bags donated by mothers, of which it reaches three a year because on the one hand, many patches are obtained from each bag and on the other, because there are not too many patients who use them.

As an ophthalmologist who uses this technique explains, the amniotic membrane resembles the transparent film used in cooking.

After being processed, patches of two by two centimeters that remain frozen in the tissue bank are cut. When a patient requires it, a piece is thawed and placed as a biological dressing; Sometimes it integrates into the patient's eye tissue and sometimes it comes off after having done its healing work.

This property is due to the fact that it is a tissue rich in growth factors that regenerate the cornea or conjunctiva. In addition, it has the advantage that it does not generate rejection.

Science never ceases to amaze me ... for good, because I'm glad to know that the amniotic membrane fulfills a positive function for other patients beyond childbirth.
