New technique to select the best sperm

In Spain it is starting to apply a pioneering technique that allows you to choose the best sperm for use in an assisted reproduction process, the IMSI.

These acronyms mean "Intracitoplasmic Microinjection of Morphologically Selected Sperm", and ultimately what is involved is to increase sperm visualization up to 8,000 times, which allows selecting those that have a better morphology.

Thanks to this greater observation of the appearance of sperm, the worst formed can be ruled out, thereby increasing the chances of a assisted reproduction process finish successfully.

It is a method that can bring many benefits, especially considering that it is currently common to find invalid sperm, and that 50% of infertility problems is due to the male cause. In Spain, the majority of young people have a semen of poor quality, inferior to that recommended by the World Health Organization.

The IMSI technique was created in Israel and developed in France and Belgium, and despite the good expectations and success rates currently only a dozen centers in the European Union have this technique, due to the high cost of the technology required .

In Spain it is the Center for Infertility and Human Reproduction (CIRH), based in Barcelona and Lleida, is the first that already applies the IMSI in its assisted reproduction processes. Hopefully this method will be extended and facilitate the fertilization process to so many couples who need it.
