An alarming reality: the number of births in Spain is the lowest since 1941

Our country continues to age and does so at worrying levels. According to the data provided by the National Statistics Institute (INE), During the first six months of the year the number of births decreased by 5.8% and is the lowest since there are records, in 1941. In addition, deaths increased 2.1%.

These are data from 'Statistics of the Natural Movement of the Population (Births, Deaths and Marriages)' that has been published today.

Historical negative figures

Between January and June 2018 just 179,794 children were born, the lowest figure according to the INE, since they have birth data, in 1941.

The number of newborns decreased in all autonomous communities, although the most affected were La Rioja (-13.7%), Extremadura (-10.3%) and Cantabria (-7.8%).

It just seems to hold the plummet foreign mother babies: they accounted for 20.0% of total births, compared to 18.8% in the same half of 2017.

In Babies and more In Spain fewer and fewer children are born (and it is very worrying)

In the opposite case is the increase in deaths: 226,384 people died during this time, 2.1% more than in 2017 and a much higher figure than in recent years.

And, unfortunately, the sum of both figures draws a vegetative growth of our country in negative (-46,590 people in the first six months of 2018), the result of the difference between births and deaths.

This translates into an aging of the population, which is more relevant in Galicia, Castilla y León and Comunidad Valenciana, being the Community of Madrid, that of Murcia and the Balearic Islands, the only ones that have a more positive growth.

We also got married less

Also the number of weddings has decreased in the first six months of 2018: 69,777 marriages were registered, 5.7% less than in 2017 during the same period.

As for the communities where more couples said yes, there is more increase in Cantabria (6.8%), La Rioja (5.6%) and Canary Islands (1.1%), while more declines Defendants were registered in Galicia (-14.7%), Community of Madrid (-14.1%) and Extremadura (-10.2%).
