Project "I listen to you", for a respected motherhood

Although the rights of women and children are widely established and ratified by the international community, we find many shortcomings in the world. Some of them occur in hospitals, and at the time of birth. The project "I listen to you" arises with the purpose that maternity units are respectful with the rights of women and babies.

The name of the project, which is carried out in Argentina, derives from Article 12 of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, which refers to the right of every child to be heard and taken seriously.

They start from the idea that many of the problems that derive from health care services, particularly in maternity hospitals, derive from problems in the recognition of people (newborns, women) as subjects of rights.

The violation of rights They express themselves in many ways, although we must also recognize the work of many professionals and hospitals to change this, such as those that join the initiative "Hospitals friends of children."

But there are still deficiencies in the behaviors of the health team, in the design of the facilities, in the models of relationship between health professionals and patients, in the lack of spaces for participation, in the use of medical practices not recommended or who do not have the consent of patients (including newborns) ...

The project is part of the "Safe and Family-centered Maternity" Initiative proposed by UNICEF - Argentina, with the support of the Ministry of Health of the Nation and the Provincial Ministries of Health. It involves more than 100 maternity hospitals in the country.

Its fundamental purpose is to integrate the perspective of rights and gender in the practices of the maternity health team and to collaborate with the implementation of the strategy of Safe and Family-centered Maternity, through health practices more respectful of the rights of women, children, girls and teenagers.

It is always positive that the training and critical reflection of professionals involved in childbirth are encouraged, and ensuring that women are not discriminated against or that their rights (such as those of the baby) are taken into account is essential.

Hopefully the specific objectives of the project "I listen to you" for a respected motherhood, among those who are training the health teams of the hospitals involved, are paying off in the time it has been running. And it is that the greatest beneficiaries are mothers and babies who are at a crucial, unique, unrepeatable moment.
