'How to build a healthy and safe school': a guide to promote health in schools

Do you know how fathers and mothers can intervene in the construction of a healthy school? It is something that interests us, right? And is it not true that the first step towards achieving an objective is to believe in our possibilities?

Now we all have at our disposal the Guide 'How to build a healthy and safe school', edited by the Spanish Confederation of Parent Associations, which has had Technical support from the Health Education Foundation (FUNDADEPS). What characteristics does a school that promotes health have? The International Union for Health Promotion and Education (UIPES) recently prepared the document “Generate health promoting schools: guidelines to promote health in school”, with the aim of help members of the educational community to promote and participate in this process of turning the school into a healthy and safe environment.

The guide aims to provide the parents and mothers of students who participate in the AMPAS the basic tools to promote and accompany the process of turning schools into healthy and safe centers, where their sons and daughters can fully develop with the highest level of well-being possible

This Guide provides information and basic tools to intervene in the processes that will make our children's school a healthier place, taking into account all the factors that affect their health. We talk about canteens, hygiene campaigns, promotion of an active life, healthy environment, etc.

It is structured in two large blocks: the first one, where the objectives are defined and a healthy and safe school is developed briefly; and the second, which specifies the elements and themes that should be included in a comprehensive plan for health promotion at school, including a detailed list of the aspects on which fathers and mothers should pay attention.

So you know! if you want a healthier school that transmits healthy lifestyles to your children, do not doubt that it is time to take action, fathers and mothers have much to say and contribute, whether it is done through the usual channels (AMPAs, Federations of Associations of Fathers ...) or providing our vision in meetings of groups or meetings with the director.

The Guide has been funded by the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality.
