Old movies for children: Wargames

The movie Wargames or War games It was the way in which many of the children and young people of my generation became fond of computers and the possibilities they offered. Although of course, then we did not know how it would evolve, especially the Internet. And that in War Games already presented the network that connected the machines although it was far from being as popular and as widespread as it is today.

The War Games argument is simple, it is a teenager who is dedicated to connect to any computer that can from home and takes the opportunity to modify data, for example, class notes, home bills and the amount of air travel. And when he decides to find more machines is when he meets something called Joshua which in turn managed a thing called Wopr (that looks like that sounded like advertising) and almost World War III breaks out. It is a time, the year 1983 in which the film is set, where the Russians were still the bad guys and the Americans the good guys. Perhaps that is the part where you can tell more that time has passed because in the rest you can see how the technology of the time was, closer then to the arrival of the human being to the moon than the arrival of the Curiosity to Mars.

In Microserves they say that has aged with dignity although there are nice things:

such as acoustic coupler, telephone booths or aerobics fashion

Although I think we now have the whatsapp, mobile phones at restaurant tables and fans of running non-stop, Forrest type, and pedaling on the sidewalks ringing the bell. I'm sure it will also go out of style or at least I hope so.

The movie is directed by John badham (Saturday Night Fever director) and starring Matthew Broderick that he was like our hero of adolescence because he got into some tremendous trouble even though he did cool things from his room. It also manages to access the army facilities and almost, almost triggers the third world war. I also had a friend (Ally Sheedy) who was what we all wanted to have then to tell them our successes with computers and video games. And that has also changed and today's young people change friends easily while reading and writing on the mobile phone.

The movie has rhythm and can be seen in family. I recommend it for kids who have already exceeded ten years although you will have to explain some things to them that will be absurd in the times that are running. In any case a film that had a great script, which was perfect at the time and that although it shows the aesthetics of the eighties it is true that a generational change is seen between bored parents and dynamic young people, irresponsible although very brave and willing to change the world (although they spend a little).

And finally, we remember the most important lesson from the movie Joshua learns after practicing with the three in a row and before playing (?) the nuclear war:

"It's funny, the only way to win in this game is not to play"
