The Madrid Zoo Aquarium asks for help in choosing the name of the little gorilla

On March 8, 2014, a beautiful offshore gorilla at Madrid Aquarium Zoo. His mom's name is Gorka and he has not separated a single second of his young by wrapping the child in his arms, breastfeeding him every 3 hours and communicating with him through caresses and sounds. It was very complicated to know what the sex was until finally, and how can be seen in the video from below, the baby gorilla is a male and that is why the Zoo encourages us to choose the name for him from a list.

Through the official website of Zoo Aquarium of Madrid (it is a Facebook application) and until next April 25, 2014 we can vote for one of the four names:

  • Garamba, Congo national park
  • Gweru, city of Zimbabwe
  • Gheche, "Small" in the Swahili African ethnic language
  • Gaika, "Restless" in Swahili

Apparently the rest of the adults in the group have reacted with an apparent indifference, keeping the respect and the distances necessary for the recent mother to dedicate herself completely to her baby. Yuba and Gwet, the two offspring, have wanted to approach and caress the new inhabitant, being the latter of six years and eldest daughter of Gorka, who remains seated next to her mother thus learning maternal care from her. This is a natural behavior in young gorillas who learn maternal care from their parent before reaching the reproductive age, starting at age 8.

The most voted name will be discovered by the children who will participate in the workshop Caregiver for a day which will take place on May 2, at Zoo Aquarium in Madrid. We will be very attentive to communicate the name of the offspring and we will continue pending the news of the Zoo to know more stories of nature.
